Brazil bike lane built without taking waves into account
RIO DE JANEIRO – A Brazilian engineer tells a major news portal that the bike lane that collapsed last week in Rio de Janeiro was built without taking strong waves into account.
At least two people were killed Thursday after a giant wave apparently swept up a rocky cliff, lifted an approximately 150-foot (50-meter) stretch of the bike path and sent it plunging onto the rocks and sea below.
Moacyr Duarte is a researcher and professor at the Engineering School of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.
The G1 news portal quoted him on Tuesday saying the bike path’s project did not foresee the impact strong waves could have on the structure.
Duarte could not be immediately located for additional comment.
A copy of the bike path plan’s project could not be found.
