Republican Stauber announces bid for reelection to Congress

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Republican congressman and staunch Donald Trump ally who has been representing Minnesota’s Iron Range for the last four years says he’s running for reelection. Rep. Pete Stauber announced his campaign in a video released Monday labeled “Enough is Enough.”Stauber was first elected in 2018 in the 8th Congressional District, once considered a lock for Democrats. That came after then-President Trump gave Stauber an enthusiastic endorsement at a rally in Duluth. Stauber was reelected in 2020 with a comfortable victory over Democrat Quinn Nystrom. The 8th Congressional District currently covers parts of northern and central Minnesota. That is expected to change as part of the redistricting this year.

FATHER KILLED- SON CHARGED

Minneapolis man charged with killing father

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A Minneapolis man is due in court Tuesday on charges of killing his father by hitting him in the head with a hammer and stabbing him. Thirty-three-year-old Anthony Jolson is charged with second-degree murder in the death of his 58-year-old father Thursday. His bail has been set at $1 million. It’s not yet clear if Jolson has an attorney who could comment on his behalf. According to criminal complaint, Jolson’s brother had gone ice skating and returned home to find his father slumped over on the couch and unresponsive. The complaint said Jolson had specks of blood on his forehead and allegedly told his brother that he “did something really bad” and that the devil made him do it.

Ice road on large northern Minnesota lake opens for 2nd year

WARROAD, Minn. (AP) — A 37-mile ice highway in Minnesota that takes motorists across the mammoth Lake of the Woods to the northernmost point in the contiguous United States is open for the second straight year. The toll is $250 per vehicle. The road costs an estimated $1,500 per mile for plowing and other upkeep. It begins in Warroad and ends at the Northwest Angle resort community, which is known for its ice fishing. The highway allows people to bypass a drive into Canada or get there in a vehicle rather than a plane or snowmobile. Minnesota Public Radio News reports that the ice road was first created last winter when the Canadian border was closed to nonessential travel from the U.S. amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

VENTILATOR FIGHT

Judge stops Minnesota hospital from disconnecting ventilator

COON RAPIDS, Minn. (AP) — A man who has been suffering from a severe case of COVID-19 and was being kept alive by a ventilator has been moved from a Minnesota hospital to a Texas facility after a judge issued a restraining order stopping the hospital from turning off his machine. Fifty-five-year-old Scott Quiner, of Buffalo, was a patient at Mercy Hospital in Coon Rapids. According to the family’s attorney, he was flown to an unnamed facility in Texas over the weekend. Allina Health, which operates Mercy Hospital, issued a statement saying it is grateful the family was able to find a health care facility that will meet their needs. An Anoka County judge granted a petition from Quiner’s wife, Anne, that prevented Mercy from disconnecting the ventilator.

FATAL ALTERCATION

Man held on possible charges in fatal fight in Duluth

DULUTH, Minn. (AP) — Criminal charges are expected against a man involved in a fatal altercation in Duluth. Officers were dispatched to a medical call shortly before 1 a.m. Saturday where they found an unconscious man on the floor who was laterpronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not yet identified the 42-year-old victim. Police learned the victim had been involved in a physical fight with the suspect, who was injured and taken to the hospital for treatment. Officials say the suspect was later transferred to the Public Safety Building where he damaged an interrogation room. The man is being held in the St. Louis County Jail on a possible charge of first-degree manslaughter.

TRAFFIC STOP-SHOT FIRED

Man apprehended after allegedly shooting at Willmar police

WILLMAR, Minn. (AP) — A 36-year-old man was apprehended after allegedly firing a handgun at Willmar police during a traffic stop and fleeing into a nearby neighborhood. Police say one round was fired at an officer, who was not hit or injured but immediately called for backup about 8:30 p.m. Saturday. The suspect ran into a neighborhood, where police used drones and aircraft to search for him. After a robotic camera confirmed that the alleged shooter was inside a garage, SWAT teams used tear gas and a battering ram attached to a vehicle to take him into custody. KARE-TV reports that the man was found with self-inflicted injuries and was taken to a local hospital for treatment. He was released Sunday and taken to the Kandiyohi County Jail.

Last day: Minneapolis’ 1st Black police chief leaves quietly

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minneapolis’ first Black police chief served his last day in office on Saturday. Medaria Arradondo, who announced he was stepping down last month, had a variety of positions with the department for 30 years. He started as a patrol officer in north Minneapolis in 1989 before becoming an inspector of the first precinct in 2013. He was promoted to chief in 2017. In proclaiming Saturday as Medaria Arradondo Day, Mayor Jacob Frey said the chief has “embodied decency, community, and courage in his historic tenure” and “has been unabashed in his commitment to truth, justice and transparency.” The 54-year-old Arradondo was unavailable for comment on his last day in office. An official for the department said he wanted to go out quietly.

AIRPORT SNOW PLOW CONTRACT

Airport snow plow drivers reached tentative deal on contract

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Workers who clear snow from runways, streets and sidewalks at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport have reached agreement with the Metropolitan Airports Commission on a tentative contract. Teamsters 320 union representatives will present the contract to its members for a vote next week. It affects about 85 employees including those who work at Holman Field, Crystal, Airlake, Flying Cloud, Anoka County-Blaine and Lake Elmo airports. Terms of the agreement were not released. The commission says the pay varies by season. In 2019, the median gross pay was $103,280 with 48 employees earning more than $100,000. In 2020, the median gross pay was $89,601 with 18 employees making more than $100,000.
