DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – Supporters of a well-known rights activist in the island kingdom of Bahrain say he has been returned to police custody a day after being hospitalized for an irregular heartbeat.
The Bahrain Institute for Rights and Democracy said Wednesday that Nabeel Rajab was taken from the Bahrain Defence Force Hospital back to a police station where he is being held.
It says his family reports that he is tired and continues to have an irregular heartbeat. Bahraini officials said late Tuesday that tests showed his health was normal.
Rajab was arrested early on June 13 and held in solitary confinement. He faces a charge of spreading “false news” in the kingdom, which is home to the U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet.
