Lawyer: Mom accused in drownings dealt with mental illness
HOUSTON – A lawyer for a Houston mother accused of drowning her two children in a bathtub says the woman has a history of mental illness, including schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
Attorney Alvin Nunnery says Sheborah Thomas did not appear at a court hearing Wednesday because she is still undergoing a mental health evaluation.
The 30-year-old is being held in the mental health ward of the Harris County Jail following her arrest on two counts of capital murder under 10 years of age.
Nunnery described Thomas as being in a catatonic, almost incoherent state when he visited her in jail.
Police say Thomas told investigators that she drowned her 5-year-old daughter and 7-year-old son on Friday and hid their bodies underneath a neighbour’s house Sunday.
