Toronto’s Melissa Pagnotta to compete for Canada in taekwondo at Rio Olympics

Toronto’s Melissa Pagnotta will represent Canada in taekwondo at this summer’s Rio Olympics.

Pagnotta will compete in the under 67-kilogram division.

A Pan Am and Commonwealth Games champion, Pagnotta will be making her Olympic debut.

“I have been training hard and will do my absolute best to make Canada proud as I take on the world’s toughest competitors in Rio,” said Pagnotta.

Canada has won two Olympic taekwondo medals — Karine Sergerie’s silver at Beijing in 2008 and Dominique Bosshart’s bronze at Sydney in 2000.

The Rio Olympics open Aug. 5.
