Buses collide in Peru, killing at least 17 people

LIMA, Peru – A hospital director says at least 17 people have died and dozens are injured following a head-on collision between two buses on a Peruvian highway.

Dr. Juan Jose Aguado told reporters at a news conference that more than 40 injured people also were brought to his hospital in the city of Nazca, near where the crash occurred shortly before midnight Tuesday.

Highway police say one of the buses was en route from the southern town of Cusco to Lima while the other was heading south from Ica when the crash occurred early Wednesday.

Police say they are investigating the cause of the accident and working to dentify the victims.
