VANCOUVER – A senior federal cabinet minister has launched a scathing attack on a review board's decision to grant escorted outings to a British Columbia man who killed his three children.
Industry Minister James Moore issued a statement Saturday saying the decision to grant Allan Schoenborn the privilege is an "insult."
Schoenborn has been held in a psychiatric facility since being found not criminally responsible for the 2008 killings of his 10-year-old daughter Kaitlynne and sons Max, 8 and Cordon, five.
The B.C. Review Board ruled Friday that Schoenborn's illness has been in remission for many years.
Its decision came despite being cautioned by the Crown to heed new federal legislation giving them the power to hold mentally ill offenders indefinitely.
Schoenborn's ex-wife Darcie Clark wants her former husband declared a "high risk" offender and Moore says the B.C. government should take a look at how such cases are dealt with in the future.
"Our hearts go out to Darcie Clarke and her family in this difficult time," Moore said in the statement.
"This decision by the B.C. Review Board is an insult and cannot be defended. It should prompt the B.C. Government to review and reform this area of our justice system to better protect victims and our communities."
B.C. Justice Minister Suzanne Anton said Friday that her "heart goes out" to the family but added it's important to respect the review board's independence, which is established under the Criminal Code.
The Crown has 15 days to decide whether to appeal the decision.
The board noted that prior to any outing, Schoenborn's mental stability and any risk he might pose would be assessed.

He should be locked down forever or put the death penalty back into system to handle people like him
If he reoffends , then the review board should be charged as his accomplices.
I agree
too bad the electric chair couldn’t be used cause that’s what this guy deserved…. I wouldn’t want to be on the board that ever released this animal.
I agree with you. This man is a menace, and should be locked up forever. All those responsible for allowing this should be held accountable, should he do anything whatsoever, I feel sorry for the family he has destroyed, Imagine, having to watch your back, 24-7.
My take on this…..He killed 3 of his kids…from a relationship that ended, he committed a horrendous tragedy…and claimed insane..after killing his kids..who wouldn’t be crazy after that? He should do the rest incarcerated….with pictures of his kids in his cell…wtf? Our justice system needs re-working….
Publish the names of the Review board.
He has already terminated three innocent lives….why has he been given any freedom? Not happy with this review board’s decision.Someone needs to come to the defence of the children. Insane or not…Schoenborn needs to be accountable for his actions, and the decision given is not the right one.Sympathies to Darcie, family and friends!
I agree with the comment..What is he does not take his medication…Then… What?
I fully agree.
they say he is in remission..how can a person with mental problems be in remission? even people with cancer or any other disease can be in remission for a time..they never know if or when it will be back and what happens WHEN he gets his so called in remission back..How many others will he kill or harm and say he didn’t know what he did..His children didn’t have a chance..DON’T GIVE HIM ONE to kill again!
Whether or not he ever kills anyone again, this man has taken three lives and needs to be incarcerated for the rest of his life. This is a terrible decision and makes a mockery of “justice”.Who really cares whether he was crazy or not?I personally do not believe anyone who tries to run and hide after committing such a crime is sane enough to be punished for it.While I personally believe he pulled a fast one getting the NCR designation in the first place, it really makes no difference. He needs to be in jail.Forever.Period.
I don’t want to believe this,,, beyond crazy to let this man out, very wrong…..
This decision was a grievous mistake.I hope the appeal reverses this bum decision.
When he is out and he does NOT take his medication, like before, what makes this review board believe he will not kill more children- only our children this time. We wish to have the names of this review board pubished so there is some accountability for their actions!
ME thinks the REVIEW BOARD MEMBERS also sit on the Board of FIFA!
