Vancouver native Jeremy Shaw winner of the $50,000 Sobey Art Award

OTTAWA – Vancouver native Jeremy Shaw is this year’s winner of the $50,000 Sobey Art Award recognizing the work of contemporary artists aged 40 and under.

The prize’s jury said Shaw’s work “speaks to a fundamental longing for transcendence” and “how art can translate what is challenging to articulate.”

The other shortlisted artists for the prize were Halifax-based William Robinson, Toronto resident and Okotoks, Alta.-native Charles Stankievech, Edmonton-based Brenda Draney and Montreal’s Hajra Waheed. They each receive $10,000.

Work by all the artists is currently being exhibited at the National Gallery of Canada through Feb. 5, 2017.

The award was initiated in 2002 by the Sobey Art Foundation.
