Penticton hatches backyard chicken plan

Penticton city council has given the go-ahead for a trial backyard chicken project but space is limited.

Would-be chicken farmers must fill out an application to keep backyard hens during the 18-month pilot project. Legislation for such permits requires addresses to be published as part of the approval process. The deadline to apply is 4 p.m. April 15.

If a household becomes eligible the farmer must follow the rules. Only five hens will be permitted and roosters are not allowed. Also the hen coop will not be visible from the street, no hen coop or other materials are to be put in front yards and equipment will be no closer than 1.5 metres from any property line.
