The Latest: Resident felt 1 jolt from Hawaii earthquake

HONOLULU – The Latest on the earthquake that hit Hawaii’s Big Island (all times local):

8 a.m.

Big Island resident Marie Onouye says she felt one large jolt when an earthquake struck Hawaii’s southernmost island.

The part-owner of The Volcano Store says Thursday morning’s temblor didn’t cause anything to fall to the ground. She didn’t see any damage from the quake.

The U.S. Geological Survey said Thursday that the magnitude 5.3 earthquake hit just after 7 a.m. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center says no tsunami was expected as a result of the quake.

The quake was centred 11 miles (18 kilometres) southeast of Volcano. It centred 5 miles (8 kilometres) below the surface.

The USGS initially measured the quake at magnitude 5.1.

A magnitude 5.1 earthquake shook Hawaii’s southernmost island Thursday morning.

The U.S. Geological Survey said Thursday that the quake was centred about 11 miles (18 kilometres) southeast of Volcano town on the Big Island. It hit just after 7 a.m.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center says no tsunami was expected as a result of the earthquake.

The USGS put the earthquake at magnitude 5.3.
