Record 800-metre run for Melissa Bishop with Rio Olympics around the corner
EDMONTON – Melissa Bishop is rounding into Olympic form at just the right time.
The 27-year-old from Eganville, Ont., broke her own Canadian record in winning the 800 metres at the TrackTown Classic on Friday.
With the Rio Olympics just around the corner, Bishop ran one minute 57.43 seconds, to dip below her previous mark of 1:57.52 that she set en route to winning silver at last summer’s world championships in Beijing.
Bishop broke the record at Foote Field, almost a week after winning the event on the same track at the Canadian Olympic track and field trials.
Andre De Grasse won the 200 metres on Friday, crossing in 20.20 seconds.
The Olympics are Aug. 5-21.
