UPDATE: Woman hit on Highway 33 in Rutland
KELOWNA – RCMP investigators are on the scene of a crash involving a vehicle and a woman in her 70s on Highway 33 in Kelowna.
Const. Steve Holmes says the woman was crossing Highway 33 near Roxby Road in front of Coopers Foods, June 1 just after 3 p.m. when she was hit by a Nissan Pathfinder driven by a 46-year-old Kelowna woman.
The pedestrian, a 76-year-old woman, was rushed to Kelowna General Hospital with serious, potentially life-threatening injuries.
Holmes says there were no indications the driver braked, so she may not have seen the woman crossing outside the crosswalk and about 150 metres from the intersection.
Alcohol is not believed to be a factor and charges have not been laid.
Holmes says the incident underscores the danger faced when crossing a busy road outside a marked crosswalk.
"Don't take chances darting across the road," he says. "You're taking your life into your hands."

It’s a shame, but it was asked for. I know this spot, and there is a designated cross walk very close by. I see people J-walking all the bloody time around Kelowna. I’ve seen people get hit, and I’ve seen people cause accidents from doing this. Is it really necessary to J-walk when there’s a cross walk really close by? I think not. Not only did this woman get hit, but the driver was probably pointlessly traumatized… If only people would use the crosswalks more often, these type of incidents would happen less often perhaps.

Havingpatience can save your life, using the cross walk can even be dangerous, but choosing not to use it is just dumb!

Don’t understand why she was trying to cross when there is a crosswalk close by.To elderly to dart across any road no matter your age.
