WEEKI WACHEE, Fla. – The body of a diver who had gone missing while exploring an underwater cave near Florida’s Gulf Coast has been found.
Authorities said Thursday that the body of 20-year-old Said Marjane was found by a dive team called in after he never resurfaced from exploring the Eagle’s Nest cave Wednesday afternoon.
The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office says Marjane was “free diving” with five friends. “Free divers” don’t use oxygen tanks.
The six divers had made up to 20 dives over several hours when Marjane said he wanted to see how long he could stay underwater.
He went down with another diver for safety, descending at least 80 feet. The friend returned to the surface but Marjane never did.
With Marjane’s death, least 13 divers have died there since 1981.
