More than 100 escaped inmates at large in Brazil

SAO PAULO – Officials say more than 100 inmates remain at large more than two days after a mass breakout at a prison in the Brazilian state of Sao Paulo.

The state prison administration says in a statement issued Saturday that authorities have recaptured 343 of the 470 inmates who escaped from the Progressao Penitentiary in Jardinopolis on Thursday.

Progressao was built to hold 1,080 inmates, but held 1,861.

Prison officials said the inmates escaped during a riot that started during a routine search. They initially said all had been recaptured.

No one was reported hurt during the uprising.
