Filmmakers invited to show their stuff at Peach Fest

PENTICTON – There is going to be a new form of entertainment at the Penticton Peach Festival this year with the addition of Reel Peach Fest, a new venue for both professional and budding filmmakers to show their stuff.

Each night, after 9 p.m., between August 5 and 9 as stagehands prepare for each evening’s round of free entertainment, the Reel Peach Fest will provide an opportunity for filmmakers to engage the thousands in Okanagan Lake Park waiting to hear the evening’s main act, according to a media release.

“Tourism needs collateral to promote the region with authentic experiences from different perspectives and Peach Fest had a time slot to fill, so it is a win-win for all," Penticton mayor and festival organizer Andrew Jakubeit says in the release.

Organizers are encouraging filmmakers are encouraged to enter one to three minute commercials or film shorts in one of two categories: Liquid Libations and Okanagan Experience.

Liquid Libations can be any commercial or film short concerning Okanagan wine, craft beer, distillery cider, juice or soda. Okanagan Experience can be a commercial or film short showcasing an Okanagan experience such as cycling, outdoor adventure, wine and dine, festivals, family fun and watersports. Submissions are to be family friendly.

There will be prizes awarded for each category. First place is worth $1,000, second place $500, third place $250 and fan’s choice at $500, the release says. The festival is open to both professional and amateur film makers. Tourism Penticton and Thompson Okanagan Tourist Association are the prize sponsors.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
