The Latest: 2nd person arrested in coal exec’s death

WILLIAMSON, W.Va. – The Latest on the fatal shooting of ex-coal chief executive Bennett Hatfield in southern West Virginia (all times local):

4:30 p.m.

A second man has been arrested in an investigation into an ex-coal executive’s death in West Virginia.

Twenty-year-old Ricky Dean Peterson of Wayne was being held Tuesday at the Western Regional Jail.

Media outlets report Peterson is charged in a criminal complaint with being an accessory after the fact, obstructing and providing false information to an officer.

Bennett Hatfield was found fatally shot at a cemetery Monday. Authorities said Tuesday that Anthony Arriaga was arrested in Ohio on a murder warrant.

The complaint says after Arriaga allegedly went to Peterson’s home before going to Ohio, Peterson told a state trooper he had no knowledge about Arriaga or Hatfield’s death. Two others at the residence allegedly told the trooper that Arriaga had been there and spoke with Peterson.

A sheriff says a man has been arrested in the death of a former coal company executive found shot at a West Virginia cemetery where his wife is buried.

Mingo County Sheriff James Smith said Tuesday that 20-year-old Anthony Arriaga was being held on a homicide warrant in Allen County, Ohio. Smith says the suspect is being held in Monday’s shooting of 59-year-old Bennett K. Hatfield.

Hatfield resigned in 2015 as president and CEO of Patriot Coal. He was International Coal Group’s CEO when a 2006 explosion in northern West Virginia killed 12 miners.

Smith says Hatfield was fatally shot at Mountain View Memory Gardens, a cemetery in southern West Virginia’s Mingo County.

The sheriff says detectives were interviewing Arriaga and will seek his extradition to West Virginia.
