SYDNEY, Australia – The Latest on elections in Australia (all times local):
3 p.m.
Australia’s prime minister says his conservative coalition will remain in power for a second three-year term following the country’s tight national election.
Vote counting is still underway from the July 2 ballot. But Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said on Sunday that his Liberal Party-led coalition had won the election.
But it is not yet known if the coalition will win enough seats in the House of Representatives to form a majority government or whether the country will have a hung parliament. If that happens, the coalition will need to forge an alliance with independent and minor party lawmakers to form a minority government.
