Correction: Guatemala-Prosecutor story

GUATEMALA CITY – In a story May 30 about Guatemala naming a new attorney general, because of a translation error The Associated Press erroneously reported that she replaced the previous chief prosecutor. In Guatemala the attorney general is the government’s top lawyer but does not have prosecutorial powers. The story also misspelled her first name, Annabella.

A corrected version of the story is below:

Guatemala gets new attorney general after resignation

Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales has named a new attorney general after the previous one resigned due to threats

Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales has named a new attorney general after the previous one resigned due to threats.

Lawyer Annabella Morfin will now be the country’s top legal officer, replacing Maria Eugenia Villagran. Villagran told a local radio station on Monday that she will leave Guatemala due to the threats.

She attributed the threats received by her staff to the cases handled by her office, which include high-profile corruption cases.

One of the largest cases Morfin will take over involves allegations of bribes paid to a network of government officials, business executives and private citizens in exchange for granting a port operating contract.

Former President Otto Perez Molina and other officials remain jailed in connection with that and other cases.
