Norm Macdonald bringing stand up routine to Kelowna

OKANAGAN – Canadian comic Norm Macdonald is bringing his stand-up routine to Kelowna this fall.

Best known as a former Saturday Night Live cast member, Macdonald will be taking to the stage at the Kelowna Community Theatre this September.

Macdonald has an impressive resume in the comedy world which includes anchoring the popular Weekend Update on SNL for three of his five years there. Most recently, Macdonald was the final stand-up act on the Late Show with David Letterman.

He has made appearances on the Drew Carey Show and NewsRadio and early on, was a staff writer for the sitcom Roseanne.

Comedy Central named MacDonald #83 on the list of 100 Greatest Stand-Ups of all Time. He has twice hosted his own show; the Norm Show from 1999 to 2001 and the Sports Show on Comedy Central.

Macdonald joined SNL in 1993 where he was known for his brash, outspoken commentary and specialized in impressions of David Letterman, Bob Dole, Burt Reynolds and Larry King.

He has starred in two movies, Screwed and Dirty Work, and made appearances in many others including Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo and Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo.

Macdonald will be in Kelowna on Friday, Sept. 11, as part of a larger North American tour. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster and go on sale Friday, June 12.

John McDonald

John began life as a journalist through the Other Press, the independent student newspaper for Douglas College in New Westminster. The fluid nature of student journalism meant he was soon running the place, learning on the fly how to publish a newspaper.

It wasn’t until he moved to Kelowna he broke into the mainstream media, working for Okanagan Sunday, then the Kelowna Daily Courier and Okanagan Saturday doing news graphics and page layout. He carried on with the Kelowna Capital News, covering health and education while also working on special projects, including the design and launch of a mass market daily newspaper. After 12 years there, John rejoined the Kelowna Daily Courier as editor of the Westside Weekly, directing news coverage as the Westside became West Kelowna.

But digital media beckoned and John joined Kelowna.com as assistant editor and reporter, riding the start-up as it at first soared then went down in flames. Now John is turning dirt as city hall reporter for iNFOnews.ca where he brings his long experience to bear on the civic issues of the day.
