Three suspects in custody following Kelowna carjacking

KELOWNA – A trio of carjackers are cooling their heels in the Kelowna lock-up after police spotted them in downtown Kelowna Tuesday evening and then tracked them down to West Kelowna.

Members were called to the 100-block of Nickel Road yesterday after a man and woman produced a weapon and ordered the victim out of his own vehicle, RCMP spokesman Const. Jesse O’Donaghey said in a press release.

The victim, a 37-year-old Maple Ridge man, fled the area and called police while the suspects took off in his vehicle. He had previously known the woman.

At approximately 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 9, plainclothes officers spotted the vehicle in downtown Kelowna. RCMP followed the vehicle to the Bartley Road area of West Kelowna where three suspects were taken into custody.

O’Donaghey said a 45-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman, both from West Kelowna, as well as a 26-year-old Kelowna man, are facing possible charges of possession of stolen property over $5,000, robbery with a weapon and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. Further charges are possible as well.

The three suspects remain in custody and are scheduled to appear in court on Thursday, June 11. Police are continuing their investigation and are asking anyone with knowledge of the incident to contact Const. Steve McBride at 250-762-3300.

John began life as a journalist through the Other Press, the independent student newspaper for Douglas College in New Westminster. The fluid nature of student journalism meant he was soon running the place, learning on the fly how to publish a newspaper.

It wasn’t until he moved to Kelowna he broke into the mainstream media, working for Okanagan Sunday, then the Kelowna Daily Courier and Okanagan Saturday doing news graphics and page layout. He carried on with the Kelowna Capital News, covering health and education while also working on special projects, including the design and launch of a mass market daily newspaper. After 12 years there, John rejoined the Kelowna Daily Courier as editor of the Westside Weekly, directing news coverage as the Westside became West Kelowna.

But digital media beckoned and John joined Kelowna.com as assistant editor and reporter, riding the start-up as it at first soared then went down in flames. Now John is turning dirt as city hall reporter for iNFOnews.ca where he brings his long experience to bear on the civic issues of the day.
