B.C. SPCA to acquire Penticton Veterinary Hospital

PENTICTON – The local SPCA is receiving a generous gift from a well known Penticton veterinarian.

The B.C. SPCA announced June 10 it will be acquiring the Penticton Veterinary Hospital from retiring Penticton veterinarian Dr. Steve Harvey.

The hospital will continue to retain existing staff and will offer the same full services to the public, including the boarding of animals. The B.C. SPCA intends to expand its spay and neuter services to help suppress the overwhelming cat overpopulation crisis in the South Okanagan region, SPCA chief executive officer Craig Daniell says in a release.

The acquisition has been under negotiation for the past year. Under the terms, the B.C. SPCA will take ownership of the hospital while Dr. Harvey retains ownership of the building at 15 Duncan Ave. East in Penticton.

“It is Dr. Harvey’s vision, and our own, that this hospital will continue to be a community asset that we can work closely with other communities such as Osoyoos, Keremeos and Midway to reduce the number of cats and kittens who die needlessly each year because of overpopulation,” Daniell says.

The B.C. SPCA will acquire the facility effective July 6. This is the fourth veterinary facility for the society, which already operates a hospital in Vancouver and spay-neuter clinics in Prince George and Kamloops.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
