Former Canadian rugby international to be honoured by Welsh club side
NEWPORT, Wales – Former Canadian rugby international Rod Snow will be inducted into the Newport RFC Hall of Fame on Friday.
The 46-year-old prop from Bonavista, N.L., played 190 games for the Welsh club side, becoming a fan favourite after debuting in January 1996. Newport’s official website called him ”one of the most popular players ever to don the black-and-amber shirt.”
He will be one of 10 Newport greats to be honoured. The others will be announced at Friday’s dinner.
Snow won 62 caps for Canada between 1995 and 2007, captaining the side in 2001. He appeared in the 1995, ’99, 2003 and ’07 World Cups.
Known as the Cod, he ran the Canadian team’s kangaroo court, where players were brought up for everything from poor personal hygiene or butting into the lineup at customs.
Pat Parfrey, who used to coach him on the national team and was one of his first coaches more than 25 years ago, calls the refrigerator-sized Snow ”the best scrummaging prop in Canada.”
He played for the Barbarians, an all-star invitational side, in 1996 and 2004.
