Sessions and Trump talk need to fight transnational gang

SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador – After a week of publicly negative performance reviews from his boss, Attorney General Jeff Sessions sounds eager to emphasize what he calls the “deep commitments” he shares on “many issues” with President Donald Trump.

Those commonalities were on display Friday as Trump spoke in New York about efforts to combat the brutal MS-13 street gang while Sessions met with police officials in El Salvador, a stronghold of the transnational gang.

However while Sessions and Trump expressed nearly identical sentiments about the danger of MS-13, the day’s events only served to re-emphasize the gulf between the two men.

Trump praised several senior officials by name — including Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly, who he would name his new chief of staff later in the day.

He never mentioned Sessions.
