RCMP: 19-year-old who caused rollover accident on Benvoulin was high

KELOWNA – RCMP say the young man behind the wheel of a blue Pontiac was under the influence of drugs when he crossed the oncoming lane of Benvoulin Road Tuesday and was hit by another vehicle that rolled over into the ditch.

Cpl. Joe Duncan says the driver,19, was arrested after investigators found evidence of substance impairment.

The accident happened shortly after 6 p.m. June 16 in the 2300 block of Benvoulin Road.

A witness says she saw the Pontiac bump into the back of a white car that was driving in front of him before he swerved across the oncoming lane and went nose first into the ditch. A green car carrying two women swerved to avoid him and rolled onto its side before coming to rest in the drainage ditch on the east side of the busy road.

The driver of the green car, a 40-year-old woman was treated on the scene and released but her passenger, a 50-year-old woman, was taken to Kelowna General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The 19-year-old was also taken to hospital with undisclosed injuries. He faces possible charges of impaired driving.
