Triathlete veers off steep mountain road in Maine and dies

BATCHELDER’S GRANT, Maine – Authorities say a well-known triathlete from New Hampshire was bicycling with a friend inside a national forest in Maine when he went off a steep mountain road and died.

The Oxford County sheriff’s office says Jim Soroka was travelling at about 45 mph Saturday in the White Mountains National Forest when he apparently lost control and veered off the road.

The 69-year-old cyclist from North Conway had been descending the back side of Evans Notch on a winding, narrow and remote section of road. Authorities say he was wearing a helmet.

Soroka died at the scene.

Medical examiners in Maine are looking into how he died. His death isn’t being treated as suspicious.
