The Latest: Defence rests in murder trial of Ohio officer

CINCINNATI – The Latest on the trial of a white former University of Cincinnati police officer charged with murder following the shooting of an unarmed black man in a traffic stop (all times local):

The defence has rested in the murder trial of a white former University of Cincinnati police officer who shot a black driver last year.

Closing arguments are scheduled Wednesday in the case of Ray Tensing, with the case going to jurors afterward.

The 26-year-old Tensing was fired after the July 2015 shooting of Sam DuBose. Tensing testified Tuesday he feared for his life during the traffic stop.

Tensing said his arm was stuck in the car and the car was turning toward him.

A prosecution witness last week used an analysis of Tensing’s body camera video to contradict the former officer’s statement he was being dragged by DuBose’s vehicle.

A white former police officer on trial for murder has taken the stand to tell jurors he feared for his life when he fatally shot an unarmed black motorist during a traffic stop in Ohio.

Some police officers testified for the defence Monday that they found 26-year-old Ray Tensing looking shocked and scared after the July 2015 shooting of 43-year-old Sam DuBose near the University of Cincinnati.

An expert defence witness testified Tuesday that a frame-by-frame analysis of a body cam video shows Tensing was justified in fearing for his life because his body was “violently twisted” during the confrontation.

Tensing was an officer on the campus police force until he was fired after the shooting.

A white former police officer on trial for murder is expected to take the stand any day to tell jurors that he feared for his life when he fatally shot an unarmed black motorist during a traffic stop in Ohio.

Some police officers testified for the defence Monday that they found 26-year-old Ray Tensing looking shocked and scared after the July 2015 shooting of 43-year-old Sam DuBose near the University of Cincinnati campus.

Attorney Stewart Mathews has said he will play videotaped testimony from former University of Cincinnati president Santa Ono (OH’-noh). He has said he plans to call Tensing to testify.

The defence is also likely to call video and forensic experts to try to counter those who testified for the prosecution they found no evidence Tensing was dragged.
