Child in stroller hit by car driven by 87-year-old man

KELOWNA – The 87-year-old driver of a car which hit and dragged a stroller being pushed in a crosswalk in Kelowna is facing a review of his driver’s licence.

RCMP says the 3-year-old child was with her mother, who is eight-months pregnant, her father and family dog when the accident occurred at a marked and activated crosswalk at the intersection of Bernard Avenue and Richmond St. around 3:08 p.m., Sunday, June 21. Neither parents nor the dog were injured however the child was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

“A family was entering the crosswalk with the father pushing the child in a stroller,” Kelowna RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Joe Duncan says. “The car clipped the stroller and dragged it for a distance … the stroller flipped and the child fell out.”

Duncan says the eastbound car drove over the stroller and dragged it approximately 10 metres before the father chased him and forced him to stop. The driver appeared confused and usure of what happened. 

"By the time the vehicle stopped it was two car lengths past the intersection," he says. 

Along with a possible review of his driver’s licence, the driver was also issue several tickets and his car was impounded.

"The child is very fortunate the outcome wasn't a lot worse," Duncan says.
