Vernon mayor tight-lipped about Green Valley Motel evictions

VERNON – As tenants of the Green Valley Motel search for new homes after being served eviction notices last week, discussions about the property are going on behind closed doors at Vernon city hall.

People living at the motel need to be gone in two months, and local agencies like the John Howard Society and Social Planning Council have already sprung into action to assist displaced residents secure new housing.

Meanwhile, Vernon Mayor Akbal Mund says city council discussed the motel, which is currently up for sale for $1.195 million, at a private, closed-door meeting Monday, June 22.

“Right now, we’re going to wait the process out,” Mund says. “It’s a land deal, we’re not supposed to discuss land deals.”

He says the city would consider purchasing the property, but refused to comment on whether that is the topic of council’s in-camera meetings.

Mund says he’s concerned about the evictions, but trusts in local agencies to assist residents.

  1. this place is far from affordable by the way, the landlord charges a lot of money in monthy rates..anything from 600-850 depending, and that’s monthly, if someone bought the building they would make a lot of money just from the long term renter’s.

  2. Vernon desperately needs affordable housing.
