The Latest: 2 released from hospital in freight train crash

CHESTER, Pa. – The Latest on a freight train collision in suburban Philadelphia (all times local):

6:20 p.m.

Two crew members injured when a pair of CSX freight trains collided on tracks in suburban Philadelphia have been released from the hospital without serious injuries.

CSX spokesman Rob Doolittle says the two employees sought medical attention after the crash at a track interlocking in Chester Township, about 15 miles outside of Philadelphia. Four crew members were aboard the trains, which remained upright after the collision.

One train was empty and another carried consumer goods and food products. Both were travelling out of state.

Doolittle says recovery crews have re-railed a locomotive that had partially derailed in the collision. He expects the tracks to be in full operation and freight service to resume through the crash area Friday night.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

Two freight trains have crashed head-on on tracks outside Philadelphia, injuring two crew members.

A CSX spokesman says an empty freight train travelling to Pavonia Yard in Camden, New Jersey, from Richmond, Virginia, collided Friday morning with another CSX train carrying consumer goods and food products to Atlanta from Quebec, Canada.

Neither train was carrying hazardous materials.

Spokesman Rob Doolittle says two crew members were aboard each train during the crash at a track interlocking in Chester Township.

He declined to comment on the extent of injuries suffered by the two employees.

CSX personnel and local law enforcement are trying to determine how fast each train was travelling at the time and what caused the crash.
