Busy start to summer for Penticton RCMP

PENTICTON – The summer season is barely underway but Penticton RCMP are already feeling the heat as they deal with a high number of calls.

The Penticton detachment dealt with a total of 80 calls in what acting media spokesperson Cpl. Don Wrigglesworth referred to as a 'crazy day' yesterday, June 22.

While there was nothing substantial in the way of major crime, Wrigglesworth said members were 'all over the map' in answering calls for assistance for everything from shoplifting to domestic squabbles.

Police answered a call at Home Hardware on Monday, after a female shoplifter was reported for assaulting and threatening an employee. Police followed the woman through a nearby neighbourhood where she was seen dumping stolen goods in backyards on Phoenix Avenue before being apprehended. The woman was released on a promise to appear.

Wrigglesworth also reported numerous alarm calls yesterday, including several vehicle collisions. Several reports of tampering with the ignition of Vespa-type scooters were also received, while the detachment’s overnight shift answered calls for mischief, stolen bikes, and domestic disputes.

Police are also investigating a burned out vehicle, discovered in Max Lake in West Bench, that appears to have been dumped there in the last few days.

The past weekend was also busy with police responding to 25 calls in one five-hour stretch. A complaint about nudity at Three Mile Beach on Sunday resulted in a police visit which concluded with the naturist covering up again. It was the first complaint regarding nudity at the beach since April.

In the previous week, police dealt with several licence plate thefts, including three from out of the school district parking lot.
