Hundreds of troopers tip hats to slain NY trooper

FORT DRUM, N.Y. – Hundreds of New York state troopers held their hats to their hearts as they passed the flag-draped casket of a trooper killed in the line of duty.

Serenaded by a pianist, the troopers followed the family of Joel Davis into the funeral Saturday at an Army base in northern New York.

The 36-year-old father of three was slain last weekend. The service was held in Fort Drum’s sports complex to accommodate the crowd, which included law enforcement officers from the U.S. and Canada.

Authorities say a Fort Drum soldier, Staff Sgt. Justin Walters, fatally shot Davis on Sunday as the trooper responded to reports of shots fired on the nearby property where the soldier lived with his wife. Police say Walters had also shot her to death just before Davis arrived.
