KAMLOOPS – Shane Gottfriedson is B.C.’s new regional chief.

Gottfriedson announced a couple months ago he would not seek re-election as head of Tk'emlups te Secwepemc so that he could run for the provincial leadership role.

The election took place in Vancouver this morning, June 25, and according to Don Bain of the Union of B.C. Indian Chiefs, Gottfriedson won handily with 87 of 166 votes. Because he exceeded 84 votes, the threshold to win, there was no need to cast a second or third ballot.

First elected as chief of the Tk'emlups te Secwepemc band in the early-1990s, he served four consecutive terms, leading the community for 12 years.

Gottfriedson previously said that if elected regional chief, his top priorities would be missing and murdered aboriginal women and child welfare issues among others.
