No hiking on Okanagan rail corridor just yet

LAKE COUNTRY – Officials with the District of Lake Country are trying to get out the message the CN Rail line through the community is off limits despite the referendum which approved the purchase of the land as part of the Okanagan Rail Trail.

Crews have put up signs at access points along the rail line pointing out it is not a recreational trail

CN hasn't removed the rails and ties yet and there is a safety concern.

The signs remind the public no motorized vehicles, camping or fires are allowed on the inactive rail line.

With a voter turnout that puts other elections to shame, about 75 per cent Lake Country voters showed their support for the CN Rail corridor purchase with a resounding yes vote in April's referendum.

The last real hurdle to the $50-million purchase of the 47.5 kilometre CN Rail corridor was removed June 1 in B.C. Supreme Court where an injunction sought by the Okanagan Indian Band blocking the sale was denied.
