Penticton Vees mourning loss of team Chaplain
PENTICTON – The Penticton Vees lost a part of their family with the passing of the team’s chaplain, Jamie Weberg.
Weberg passed away Sunday, June 28 after a two-year battle with cancer, said Fraser Rodgers, spokeperson for the team.
"He was diagnosed in late 2013 with a type of bone cancer. It was an incurable one, unfortunately, but he was going through treatments the last year and a half,” Rodgers says, adding Jamie leaves a wife and two children.
It would have been Jamie’s fifth season with the Vees this year. The 36-year-old worked at the Penticton Church of Nazarene.
Vees Coach Fred Harbinson said he got to know Jamie’s family, including his parents, while he was battling cancer.
“It is a sad time for the team family, and a sad time for Jamie’s family," he said. "We’re all devastated…. It’s tough on them. He was a great guy who lived life in a great way. He had big impact on this team – he connected with the players."
The team plans to hold a celebration of life in his honour.
