Coroner: Missing teenage girl found dead near river drowned

CLARION, Pa. – A coroner says a 13-year-old girl found dead near a Pennsylvania river over the weekend accidentally drowned.

Clarion County Coroner Terry Shaffer says he made the determination after an autopsy Monday.

Shevy McGiffin’s body was found by a search crew in a creek Sunday near the Clarion River, 65 miles (104 kilometres) northeast of Pittsburgh.

Police had been searching for her since she left her Clarion home to go to a variety store on Friday. The stream where she was found is across the road from a shopping centre.

The coroner says police are investigating how the girl wound up in the stream.
