Israel decides against charging soldier in Gaza shelling
JERUSALEM – The Israeli military has decided not to file criminal charges against a commander who ordered his soldiers to open fire at a structure in the Gaza Strip in memory of an officer who was killed the previous day by fire from the site.
In its ruling Tuesday, the military advocate general determined the comments, made during the 2014 war in Gaza, were inappropriate. But it said investigators had failed to prove there was no operational justification for opening fire. It also said there were no injuries caused by the shelling.
The ruling recommended that the commander, Lt. Col. Neriya Yeshurun, be reprimanded, a relatively light punishment.
The Palestinians and human rights groups routinely accuse the military of doing a poor job at prosecuting errant soldiers.
