B.C. conservation officer suspended after refusing to kill bear cubs
PORT HARDY – A B.C. Conservation officer has been suspended without pay after he reportedly refused an order to put down two bear cubs last weekend.
The cubs were orphaned after their mother was destroyed for breaking into a meat freezer inside a mobile home in Port Hardy on Vancouver Island.
After tranquilizing the cubs, Bryce Casavant brought them to a vet to be checked out and then to the North Island Wildlife Recovery Association operated by Robin Campbell.
Campbell says the bears, believed to be around eight weeks old, were at the home only because they were looking for their mother.
An online petition has been launched by the association calling on B.C. Environment Minister Mary Polak to reinstate Casavant.
The petition had collected well over 17,000 names by early Wednesday.

We treat criminals, drug dealers etc with kid-gloves under the garb of human rights and kill a mama bear who was just trying to find food for her cubs. And then we want to kill the cubs who were crying & out looking for their dead mama. God bless officer Bryce, he deserves a medal. And BC should BAN killing of bears.

he a conservation officer contrarily to some others! the mother was ‘destroyed”, it always gets me when destroyed is used for describing the killing/slaughtering of an animal, what hypocrisy!

I say reinstate this officer with a raise.Too many people have no compassion for anything that lives, except themselves.More officers should follow this mans example.

Reinstate, with reimbursement for lost pay, supply a written apology, and give the man an award.What a stupid order to put down the cubs.The officer issuing the order to destroy the cubs should be FIRED.
