Farewell party for second departing Penticton city manager a more frugal affair

PENTICTON – Going away parties for city staffers have been scaled back following a large bill submitted earlier this year.

City of Penticton Communications Officer Simone Blais says the farewell party for exiting Interim City Manager Chuck Loewen cost the city $235 last month.

“That was the total spent in food, for veggies, meat and cheese trays with crackers and snacks. The SS Sicamous hosted the event location for free, and organized a cash bar that was a fundraiser for the society,” Blais says in an email.

Loewen served as interim city manager for four months following former Chief Administrative Officer Annette Antoniak’s departure in February of this year.

The bill for Loewen’s goodbye was much less than that for the departing Antoniak, whose farewell party on Feb.12  at the Vault Restaurant in the South Okanagan Events Centre cost taxpayers $1,400.

Penticton Mayor Andrew Jakubeit expressed surprise at the cost of the event when the bill was submitted, saying he would "make sure it didn’t happen again.”

  1. Just so stupid! Say goodbye like the rest of us… or invite the guy to your own house if you must party… STUPID decisions made by? smart? people

  2. In most work places the coworkers themselves pay for the party: potluck snacks and everyone puts in a few dollars for a gift card. Maybe people who work for the city of Penticton should do the same.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
