Three Vernon cyclists hit by vehicles cause for concern

VERNON – All road users are being reminded to be careful after three separate incidents over the past week left two cyclists injured and a third dead over.

Jennifer Wadsworth, a mother of two, was biking on 25 Avenue on July 2 when she rode in front of a pickup truck. She was rushed to hospital, but died of her injuries.

On Tuesday, July 7, a cyclist riding on Lakeshore Road was struck by a vehicle around 9 p.m. and sustained minor injuries, RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk says. Police continue to investigate the circumstances of the accident.

The next evening, around 7 p.m., Wednesday, July 8, a vehicle was coming out of an alleyway in the 4200-block of 27 Avenue and struck a cyclist. The driver apparently looked but didn’t see the person, Molendyk says. The cyclist received minor injuries and police continue to investigate. Molendyk says it is unclear whether the cyclist was on the sidewalk or in a bike lane when the accident happened.

“Just a reminder, both cyclists and vehicle operators need to be aware and look out for each other,” Molendyk says. “There’s precautions you need to take. Be conscious of other pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles.”

  1. I meant Oliver, not Osooyos, as much.

  2. If they must ride on the road, they should have licenses that prove they have learned the rules. I am tired of them darting around in traffic, and especially in Kelowna and Osooyos, wearing all black and no lights nor reflectives at night. Sidewalks one minute, in the lane the next. Sorry to the ones who abide by the rules, BUT annoyed by the countless who have/will not. Hand signals, anyone?

  3. OK we have one Single Witness Suicidal Swerve, one “no comment”, and one where the driver wasn’t paying enough attention to know if he hit the cyclist in the bike lane or on the sidewalk. Tell me again how dangerous cyclists are, because the one thing I DON’T see is any dead or injured motor vehicle occupants.

  4. it would be real nice if the city of Vernon would consider a bike path on Tronson road, it is a very narrow road that is used frequentlyby cyclists, do not understand why they haven’t done so already with the amount of traffic there ison that road.. There are whole familiesmoms , dads, and little kids that bike that road also events with bikes and peoplegoing to the beach…it is a very dangerous situation.City of Vernon shouldput it on a priority list something to think about, before someone else gets hurt or worse.

  5. So often I see cyclists on the pedestrian sidewalk.Or going against the traffic.Cyclist have to know that they are a part of traffic and have to follow the traffic rules! Also, the ought not to cross the road as a pedestrian…They have to go with the flow of traffic!Maybe a course for cyclists is necessary!Be safe!We do have bicycle paths in uce them!
