Kelowna women killed in Vernon car crash identified

VERNON – The B.C. Coroners Service has released the identities of two women who died in a head-on car accident in Vernon over the weekend.

They were Chantal Diane Bazin, 22, and Kayla Elizabeth Cartwright, 26, both from Kelowna.

According to a press release from the coroner Larry Marzinzik, Bazin was the driver, and Cartwright the front seat passenger. They were travelling southbound on Highway 97 at
approximately 11:50 p.m. when their vehicle slid across the centre line into the northbound lane, colliding with an oncoming vehicle.

Both died at the scene. The driver and passenger of the other vehicle were taken to hospital for treatment with non-life-threatening injuries.

The roads were wet at the time, and road conditions are being investigated as a possible factor in the incident, Marzinzik said.

Police and the coroners service continue to investigate. Both women's families have been notified of their deaths.

  1. WOW! I do not know these two girls…. I am very sad for the girls and their families……but it seems like everytime a “ACCIDENT” happens people have to point a finger at the road bumps, the weather….I do not know,, a squirrel ran out? For F’ss sake before you judge wait till the police report comes out….and then bitch!

  2. My heart aches for family and friends who are trying to cope with the loss of daughters who were just starting out in life, there just are no words that can make that better.

  3. Randy Otto There is definitely things wrong with the road – especially on the overpass. There are dips and bumps and an uneven edge. You have been blessed with having driven the road for ten years and not had a problem. These people were not so fortunate. Just because they are young does not mean they were speeding and looking at their cell phones. My condolences to the families. My thoughts are with you.

  4. So so sad I feel for both of their families :(

  5. nothing wrong with the road…….sppeed limit fine been travelling it for ten years……lose the cell fone!

  6. It is a terrible and devastating situation, and my heart felt condolences goes out all the families dealing with the aftermath. HOWEVER,I would blame the bumps over wet roads…they can virtually launch a car. You have young relatively inexperienced drivers a wet road and a huge dip right in the apex of the corner. I blame the BCHighways Safety Commission… I would be suing the BC Government for gross negligence causing death for their(the governments) ineptness in NOT addressing and repairing that road hazard that has been there for severalyears!

  7. so awful, my hearts go out to the families.

  8. Prayers going out to both their loved ones , so tragic
