Newfoundland and Labrador reports Zika virus in person who travelled south
ST. JOHN’S, N.L. – Newfoundland and Labrador has confirmed a case of Zika virus in someone who returned home after a trip down south.
Health officials say a vacationer came back from an unspecified southern location about a month ago and found they had been infected by the virus.
The patient reportedly suffered no complications from the virus and has fully recovered.
The news comes a day after Nova Scotia reported its first confirmed case of Zika virus.
Frank Atherton, deputy chief medical officer of health, said Monday that the illness was detected in a woman in her 30s after she fell ill upon returning to Nova Scotia.
He says she recovered, but adds that it serves as a reminder to people travelling in regions where the virus is flourishing to take precautions.
The mosquito-borne Zika virus is an epidemic in Central and Latin America, and the World Health Organization has declared it a global health emergency.
