Gov’t to back Tusk’s 2nd EU term if he does not harm Poland

WARSAW, Poland – Poland’s conservative ruling party says it will back former liberal prime minister, Donald Tusk, for a second term as European Council president only if he does not hurt the country’s interests.

The Law and Justice party did not spell out which interests were of concern.

Law and Justice accuses Tusk and his party, which held power from 2007-2015, of subordinating Poland’s interests to those of the European Union.

The party’s leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski also accuses Tusk of contributing to the death of President Lech Kaczynski, his twin brother, in a plane crash in 2010.

Spokeswoman Beata Mazurek said Monday that Law and Justice will support Tusk for a second term only “if he does not hurt Poland’s interests.”

Tusk’s current term expires in June 2017.
