SURREY, B.C. – Police say the search has been called off for a missing swimmer in the Fraser River.
Surrey RCMP say the man was some people drinking alcohol and having a bonfire on the beach when they decided to jump into the river early Saturday morning.
Police say the group was trying to swim around the Skytrain bridge pillar and back to shore, but one of the men did not come back to the surface after going under.
The other men looked for the 32-year-old Burnaby, B.C., man, but could not find him.
RCMP, search and rescue crews and the Coast Guard searched the water, but when the man was not found within several hours, the search was called off.
Police say foul play is not suspected and the man’s name has not been released.
