WESTSIDE ROAD FIRE: Evacuation alert lifted; fire 75 percent contained
WEST KELOWNA – The cool, wet weather has given crews working the Westside Road wildfire a leg up this weekend allowing them get a fire guard around 75 per cent of the blaze.
As well, the Emergency Operations Centre has lifted the Evacuation Alert for about 70 homes along Westside Road from Denison Road, north to La Casa.
B.C. Wildfire Management says crews worked to mop-up the perimeter of the 560-hectare fire by reinforcing the hand-guard and fuel-free areas on Sunday, July 26.
Crews will also begin to build control lines on the west flank of the wildfire and continue the mop-up above the homes, which were threatened just yesterday, fire information officer Jordan Turner says.
An area restriction put in place for areas around this wildfire to protect the safety of firefighting personnel and the public remains in force. Click here for a map of the restricted area.
The lightning strike sparked the fire on July 20 and the blaze flared up the next day.
