Fugitive sentenced in Iowa to federal prison

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – A man who fled prosecution on federal drug charges in 2003 has been sentenced in Iowa to 15 years in prison.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Cedar Rapids says 39-year-old Ismael Sanchez-Acevedo, who most recently lived in Surrey, British Columbia, was sentenced Thursday.

Prosecutors say Sanchez-Acevedo was charged in 2003 with dealing methamphetamine. The charge came after police found Sanchez-Acevedo and another man in a Cedar Rapids hotel room with more than 700 grams of meth and nearly $3,000 in cash.

After Sanchez-Acevedo was charged, he was released to await trial. After his release, prosecutors say, he fled to California, then Canada. He was arrested in May in Washington state, where he had gone to visit his ailing father.
