Fishing suspended along Middle Shuswap River

VERNON – Another body of water has been closed to fishing due to ongoing drought conditions in Southern B.C.

Warm water temperatures and a low flow rate are two reasons why the provincial and federal governments decided to suspend angling in Middle Shuswap River from Mabel Lake to Shuswap Falls.

The suspension will last from July 30 to Sept. 30, 2015.

A release from the provincial government states the closure is to protect fish, particularly trout, that are likely to congregate at a time of low flow and increased water temperatures.

Crown biologists continue to monitor 40 other fishing streams throughout B.C. More closures under the Federal Fisheries Act are possible if deemed necessary.

Other fishing areas have faced closure throughout the dry hot weather. Portions of the Nicola watershed, the South Thompson River and South Okanagan Rivers are currently facing angling restrictions.
