Lots going on during hot August long weekend in Penticton

PENTICTON – The weather forecast is calling for a scorching hot weekend for the August long weekend in the Peach City and there are no shortage of things to do.

The Sunshine Cabaret returns to Gyro Park today, July 31, from 5 to 10 p.m., with free music in the park.

Saturday morning the weekly downtown Farmers and Community Markets run from 7 a.m. until 1 p.m.

The Ultra 520k Canada Race also takes place throughout the August long weekend. The three-day, 520 kilometre individual endurance event begins Saturday morning with a 10 km swim on Skaha Lake, starting in Penticton and finishing in Okanagan Falls, followed by a 149.8 km bike ride from Okanagan Falls to the Richter Pass and back again.

Sunday’s race portion includes a 275.8 km bike ride from Penticton to Princeton, and Monday the race is completed with an 84.4 km run from Princeton to Summerland – all to be completed within 36 hours.

The Rotary Wheels Car Show takes place in Rotary Park east of the Peach Concession on Saturday, August 1 from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. In addition to hundreds of classic, custom and show cars there will be live entertainment, a beverage garden and food and car merchandise vendors. The first 100 entrants will be given registration kits and dash plaques.

On holiday Monday, August 3, the Downtown Penticton Association will be hosting BC Day Family Party in the Park from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., offering free family entertainment all day in Gyro Park. There will a petting zoo, bouncy castles, kids crafts, live music and market vendors on hand. Be sure to be on hand for B.C. Day cake cutting at 12 p.m.

Peach Festival begins right after the long weekend this year, starting on August 4. The City of Penticton and BC Transit have extended transit hours to accommodate those attending festival events from August 5 to 9.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
