New Joe Rich fire chief rises from the ranks

KELOWNA – The Joe Rich Fire Department has a new fire chief.

Ben Wasyliuk will take over for Curtis Nyuli who was fired by the Regional District of the Central Okanagan in May after serving as fire chief for the small community just east of Kelowna since August of 2003.

The Regional District has said it will not comment on the reasons for his dismissal, citing privacy issues.

Wasyliuk has been a firefighter with the department since 2011 and most recently serviced as an assistant chief, according to a media release from the district.

A selection committee unanimously recommended the appointment.

“With Ben coming from the ranks of the department, there will be continuity in service for the paid-on-call department,” fire services manager Dan Wildeman says in the release.
