RICHMOND, Va. – President Donald Trump is alleging via twitter that a federal investigation into former Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe was “killed,” but did not make clear by whom.
Trump’s tweet Friday appears to indicate that the investigation into McAuliffe has concluded.
The FBI declined to comment on Trump’s tweet.
The existence of a federal investigation into McAuliffe was widely reported two years ago. McAuliffe’s attorney said then that federal investigators had focused on the governor’s business dealings before he took office, and found no evidence of wrongdoing.
The scope and status of the investigation was never clear and no charges have been filed. Federal authorities never officially confirmed its existence.
McAuliffe left office earlier this year and is considered a potential 2020 Democratic presidential hopeful.
