Neighbour saves elderly couple from burning home

KELOWNA – Quick thinking by a neighbour may have saved the lives of an elderly couple when the attached garage on their home burst into flames Saturday night.

Wayne Dorman says he called 911 when he saw black smoke rising from a house at 1690 Saucier Road in the lower Mission around 8:15 p.m., Aug. 1, then ran to the house where flames were shooting from the double car garage.

An elderly couple live in the house and their daughter lives nearby. Dorman says the daughter was screaming and asking where her parents were.

“I smashed in the glass front door with a big stone from the garden,” he says.

Dorman says he grabbed the elderly woman like a WWE wrestler and got her out of the house. Her husband was frail and he had to be carefully walked out of the home.

“The garage and two vehicles inside were destroyed by the fire, but fire crews prevented the fire from spreading to the house,” Kelowna Fire Department platoon Steve Wallick says in a media release.

Wallick says the cause of the fire is under investigation, adding it’s not considered suspicious.
